The project target group is the young people who, geographically and socioeconomically, are disadvantaged. The project is based in a housing estate on the edge of Selkirk in the Scottish Borders. The project was brought to them as they did not engage in activities in the main town – for financial and geographical reasons.In addition many young folk and members of the community, through the activities of the group and live performances were exposed to live music making – the figure, when all performances are considered (at Riverside Care Home, Philiphaugh School Assembly, Borders Railway trip to Stow and performance in café there etc. – people exposed to this group number in the hundreds.(600 est.) The group became more firmly established over the year – despite a change in participants as some moved up to high school. One girl continued to attend after high school to play the bass.

Situation in 2020

Bannerfield Buskers (pre-COVID 19) was extremely strong and 17 young folk attended regularly. The group had frequent performances and had become an integral part of the community within the town of Selkirk and surrounding area. Supermarket ‘Morrison’s’ in Hawick had become a favourite busking venue and the generosity of the local community meant that the ‘Buskers’ recently earned £276 in 45 minutes. Funding issues sorted! it is anticipated that the group will restart in August 2020 with funding secured to allow this to happen.
